Taking something old and giving it a bit of a glow up. It's shabby chic for music.

It's 1997 and you're in a band. The glory days of Britpop are just about ending and the buzziest band around are 5 girls called Spice - one of whom almost joined your band (but that's another story).

You want to make a demo. Not a record, that would be ridiculous and there would be no way to release it anyway.

So plan to go in to the studio for two days maybe, although it'll probably turn out to be just one really long one. Everything is recorded to 8 track tape and there won't be many over dubs. Drums stereo tracked, keys probably mono along with bass, rhythm guitar and lead. Thats 6 tracks used up already and we need one for vocals. Maybe keep a track for dubs? Probably track the solos separate.

No comping takes (what's comping takes?). Everything needs to be right so we'd better be rehearsed. It's not going to be practical drop in much, and there definitely won't be any editing - there's only enough tape for the songs you want and even that will salvaged second hand from a BBC skip otherwise it's too expensive.

Vocals crammed in at the end of the session and that'll have to do. Corrective processing in post? Forget it. There's an EQ and a compressor, a reverb and a delay. Actually, probably not a delay. And you can have it on one track.

One final mix. That's it. No revisions - it's on tape, it's done and that's your lot. Fingers crossed it doesn't sound lacklustre and disappointing.

It sounds sort of OK but not what you hoped for. You get the master session final mixdown and copy some duplicates to cassette. In total there might be 100 copies and the vast majority of them will probably be lost. It's mainly for friends and maybe the outside chance of being discovered (of which there are clearly two hopes šŸ˜‰). There isn't even really an internet, we haven't got emails and hardly anyone has a phone let alone a smart one. At this moment that's just science fiction.

But now it's not. Around a quarter of a century later it's possible to sort of fix it up a bit. Machine learning software to partially separate the stereo mix in to stems and then digital processing to give a bit of a polish that just wasn't possible at the time. Amazingly things start to sound like you'd always hoped they would. It's 30 years later and it's still recordings made by an average bunch of guys in a band with not a lot of time or money, But approaching them now as a producer rather than a band member, and with access to resources unthinkable at the time it gives you a whole new perspective.

And now...30 years on, we can also let the songs loose and have them available for anyone who wants to listen. Modern technology may not be perfect. It may also not be always helpful. Digital recording and streaming has completely changed the way music is made and distributed. But that also means these songs get a second chance to be heard. It's not world changing, but we actually did a pretty good job.
